Milwaukee tape measure

Follow this step-by-step process to measure various aspects of your garage. This will help you determine what size garage door will fit your home.

Step 1

Measure the width of the door opener at the widest point. This is the distance between the right and left sides of the finished opening. The inside of the garage door should be framed with 2 inch x 6 inch wood jambs. Do not include any wood or vinyl trim around the door opening in your measurement.

Step 2

Measure the height of the door opening at the highest point. This is the distance between the floor and the top of the finished opening. Do not include any wood or vinyl trim around the door opening in your measurement.

Step 3

Measure the width of the areas beside the garage door opening on the interior of the garage to the left and the right of the opening. 4 inches is required on each side for the installation of the vertical track.

Step 4

Measure the area between the top of the door opening to the ceiling. Carriage House doors require 15 inches of headroom and all other doors require 12 inches of headroom for the door installation. An additional 3 inches is required for the installation of an opener.

*Installations with less than measurements shown above will require special hardware.

Step 5

Measure the distance from the opening to the rear of the garage. The door height plus an additional 18 inches is required for the door installation or an additional 4 feet 2 inches plus door height if installing an automatic garage door opener.
